South Antrim UUP MLA Danny Kinahan has highlighted the commitment and passion shown by local anglers, Farmers and environmental volunteers in working to protect our rivers and waterways.
Leading a Private Members motion on pollution of the Six Mile Water at Stormont on Tuesday, Danny also called on the multiple departments who take shared responsibility of our waterways to come together and create a strategy that effectively deals with issues of serious concern.
“We want to see the four departments working closely together. I have asked each of the Departments whether they were planning to pull the agencies together under one agency, and all of them indicated that they would not be doing so in the near future.”
Speaking of the Six mile water and the good work carried out by local anglers and other volunteers, Danny added ”It (the Six Mile Water) would not be in the good order it is in if it were not for the fishermen, the Antrim and District Angling Association and many others who have been managing it since the 1950’s.”
Danny Kinahan finished the motion by calling for the development if independent water sampling; “Last night I heard of an excellent initiative called the Anglers Monitoring Initiative, which has 22 people monitoring 28 sites in the Ballenderry river. I would like to see the same happening all the way along the Six Mile Water and, of course, on other main Rivers.”
