Colour in Dollaghan flies

First time poster so take it easy on me.
Justed wanted to know what in your opinion is the most important colour in a Dollaghan fly?
Gold and silver don't count, and I know that a lot of people would be using a wing of black artic fox or bucktail, so black doesn't count.
So I'm talking about hackle,tail or wing colour.
Also how many have replaced silver and gold tinsel with holographic. Do you think it makes much difference?

The thing about orange flies during the day is that, a lot of fishermen use them. I'm not sure if there success rate is because if the colour or is it just because a lot of irish shrimp patterns are pre orange in colour and that what is being used most of the time.
I understand the use of orange in salmon flies if we are thinking that there is an orange hue in the shrimp that the salmon are feeding on but Dollaghan I'm not so sure. Maybe it's just a trigger point but like you I have had some success with orange.
This year I've been thinking of trying to losely imitate pollen fry to see if catch rate improves. Going to tie flys with a touch of blue or purple and a teal or bronze mallard wing, have never seen a pollen fry so maybe I'm talking crap but it's just a hunch.
Why do you not like holographic? I'm not convinced myself it makes much difference but it does seem more life like because of the shimmer. Never tried mirage for the bodies of flies but I do use it for the thorax of PTN and it looks good, almost like an air bubble.
What do you think about the pollen idea?

Any fry pattern I think would work.dont quote me but I think I read somewhere that orange is the first colour fish can see in water,,but I might of dreamt that.i got a 3 1/2 lb dolloghan on sat day with a size 16 barbless hares ear with pink bead on it..so who knows maybe pink is what we should be going with..defo give the mirage ago it looks well and bit different.im sure holo it just looks bit much for me

have found my most successful fly to date to be a yellow shrimp pattern with a silver body, and always fish it on the dropper. What tactics do you guys use for dollaghan during the day. Floating line? etc Haven't caught too many during the day.

Have tried tying a few with mirage and can see what your talking about it does look a bit more subtle than silver or gold tinsel. Do you add a bit of flash to your flies? Personally I do, not a lot maybe just two strands of angel hair or mirror chystral flash. Think it gives an element of life to the fly but then again maybe it's just catching my eye.
It's probably the same reason why I put jungle cock on most of my flies, any fly usually looks better tied with it but again does it make much difference.
Have caught a fair few trout on a PTN with a pink thorax but never tried pink for Dollaghan, it's probably worth a chuck, the Sweeney Todd has pink in it and it's caught thousands of seatrout.
Don't really fish for Dollaghan during the day, just usually fish dry flies looking for a nice brownie but on the way back I fish two nymphs on the off chance I pick one up.

During the day I like to fish the deeper shaded areas under trees etc with floating line,very long leader and two small but heavy tungsten beads.casting up stream give them time to get down

Hi Jamie,
When your fishing upstream are you using a czech style or spiral indicator. Have a mate who catches a lot of seatrout during the day fishing this way with tiny tungsten bead PTN and GRHE. Have tried it myself and it's amazing how light the takes are. Without the indicator you would miss takes.

Short (20 feet max) and keep the fly line as straight and tight without causing the flys to
Drift unnaturally I can see the take on the tip of my line. I use poloroids which r a must too.
for me its about line managment an casting short. Works for me anyway. If anyone does it different I would be glad to hear there opinions

Fished upstream with two tungsten beaded nymphs on a indicator on thr without a tap. The two flies were also weighted with lead and I found because the water was pushing through that I was having trouble controlling the line and keeping the indicator afloat but I did pick up two around the 3lb mark after dark on a sink tip with two sparsely tied flies with teal as a wing with jungle cock eyes.
Tried upstream nymphing yesterday again, this time no indicator. No success again but this time I think it was more the bright conditions than my lack of skill. Reading your post I think my biggest proplem is to much line out. Know that it's harder to control but can't seem to rain myself in.

Hi eamo. Got 2 myself bit smaller on fri with very sparse medicine fly tied on single hooks.

Dvd(wet fly fishing and upstream nymphing). They helped me a bit. I fished that clady stream on fri an got 16 fishin upstream and short casts. Then I was told off that it was private and I shouldnt have fishing there
. I only get day tickets so not sure if I am meant to be fishing there but sure.what size flies and leader you using? My flies are size 14/16 with 2.4 mm tungsten beads with 3 lb 0.12 mm dia flurocarbon. 12 foot leader. 2 feet between flies. Try touse bout ten feet of fly line.cast upstream at angle so as not to line the fish. As the line comes towards you lift the rod slowly an draw the line in with other hand. U dont want fly line goin past the rod tip or it will start to drag. It takes bit of practice but its worth it I think. Let me know how u get on. An defo check out them dvds. Only time i have really caught during the day is when the waters up and using small salmon flies although not out during day much. Was down saturday nite for 1 1/2 hours and had 2 dollaghan at the BMC (1lb and 2/ 1/2 or so, lost it at the net) Was hopin to get out most nights this week but the rain earlier put a stop to that. Will give your tactics a go next time i get a chance. Where do you buy the tungsten bead nymphs? are they the same weight as goldheads?

Hi Jamie, I'm using PTN and GRHE tied on size 14 and 16 but mainly in 14teens, bought tungsten beads a few days ago. They arrived today but I've bought them to small, must check out smflyman.
Leader set up is pretty much the same as yours except I'm using 4lb floro, think main problem is to much line out.
Never fished the medicine fly but have been tying patterns with teal this year and tying them a bit sparser to see if the catch rate improves.
Maybe the reason your catching more during the day is our shitty summer, the water never seems to be as low and conditions are mostly dull. When I was out on sat got the feeling I was never going to get one in the sunshine. Would have had better craic dry flying for trout.
